Understanding heritage conservation area

March 21, 2016 stephen li

This cottage will be our dwelling place. Built sometime in the 1930's, it is situated in the suburb of Chatswood. The land size is about 770 sq meter, with sufficient outdoor space. The neighbourhood is a low density residential area.

Through this project I learn about the heritage conservation. The street has a heritage significance (character, streetscape) and therefore needs to be visually preserved.

All the dwellings along the street have harmonious design elements, including the terracotta roof; the facade; doors and windows; the (red brick) material, even the front outdoor fence have a similar form and scale. Maintaining these design is one measure of preserving the overall heritage character.

There are other additional measure, such as proportion of floor space, size control on landscape and setback.  New building part will need to have a similar visual scaling to its adjacent building. These measures preserve the heritage streetscape.
